The Torres Strait Regional Authority is a Commonwealth Authority dedicated to recognising and maintaining the special and unique Island Custom of Torres Strait Islanders living in the Torres Strait area.
As a key provider, implementer and monitor of programs for Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginal people living in the Torres Strait area, the TSRA is proud to have fostered a lasting partnership with the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation.
“The first three graduates were sponsored by external agencies, but we quickly realized the benefits of the program and sponsorship through the TSRA has been in place since 2009,” former TSRA Chairperson, John Toshie Kris said.
Current TSRA Chair Joseph Elu says he is pleased that TSRA Member for Erub and Portfolio Member for Fisheries, Kenny Bedford, will be the sixth Indigenous leader from the Torres Strait to take part in the intensive 17 month Australian Rural Leadership Program. He is currently just over half-way through Course 20 of the unique leadership program.
“Uncle John Mosby and Torres Webb were the most recent graduates, so I’ve spoken to them and other Torres Strait graduates as well as a few of the others from outside who’ve really motivated me to be a part of it,” Kenny said.
“This program is helping me to identify my strengths and weaknesses.”
The TSRA is committed to overcoming indigenous disadvantage and supporting its communities in their diverse pursuits.
