TSRA Women's Leadership Program
Seven women leaders of the Torres Strait gathered in mid-August for the first session of the Torres Strait Women’s Leadership Program 2015.
Funded by the Torres Strait Regional Authority, the program aims to develop confident, self-aware female leaders who can influence and contribute to strategic development and change in a collaborative way.
The focus of this session was ‘myself as a leader’; a reflective process for participants Larissa Bani of Mabuiag Island, Helen Mosby of Yorke Island, Susana Tapau of Murray Island and Olive Bann, Vera Havili, Lisa Lui and Jenni Pilot of Thursday Island. The group were placed in, and created some challenging situations by which they needed to rely on each other and their own inherent leadership capability. The women valued the space the Program provided to develop their communication and self-awareness in relation to each other.
As a group they have demonstrated a commitment to ‘Torres Strait Island women leading change in decision making’. The learning environment allowed for reflection, leadership stories, sharing challenges, recognising and creating opportunities and plenty of laughing.
The group will meet again in October on Thursday Island and in November for their final session in Canberra.
